GANGULY WINS ASIAN CRICKETER AWARD

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been adjudged the Asian Cricketer and Asian Batsman of the year for his fighting comeback into the Indian team at the Castrol Asian Cricket Awards here on Friday.Though Ganguly was not present at the ceremony, his wife Dona took the awards on his behalf. The Bengal left-hander also expressed his happiness on receiving the awards in a video taped message.
Sourav Ganguly has shown that with class and experience, age need not be a barrier to success. He had a fantastic year in both Tests and ODIs and it was nice to see his memorable comeback to the India team capped on Friday when he became the first recipient of the Asian Cricketer of the Year Award at the Castrol Asian Cricket Awards function held in Karachi. And on that note Ganguly cannot be faulted for his performances in 2007. It was a great year for him with 1106 runs at 61.44 in Tests and then 1240 runs at 44.28 in ODIs.

Sachin Tendulkar was named the Best ODI batsman while Gautam Gambhir grabbed the honour in Twenty20. Sri Lankan wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara took away the best Test Batsman of the year award while compatriot Farveez Maharoof was chosen as the Best ODI Bowler. Pakistan's Umar Gul was named the Best Twenty20 Bowler.Yuvraj Singh was given an special award for hitting six sixes in the Twenty20 World Cup against England.Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan, not surprisingly, took away the Best Bowler award.

BILL GATES CALLS IT A DAY

Bill Gates is retiring, sort of. He is still only 52, and he is going off to spend more time guiding the world’s richest philanthropy, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He will still be Microsoft’s chairman and largest shareholder, but Friday is his last day as a full-time worker at the software giant, marking the unofficial end of his career as a business leader.
It has been a transition two years in the making. But it still comes with the jarring shock that accompanies the end of an era. Bill Gates, the geek god synonymous with Microsoft, is now officially retired from the company he created.
Despite his success, Gates is moving on as the company he co-founded in 1975 is struggling to find its way. The center of gravity in technology has shifted from PCs to Net, altering the old rules of competition that were so lucratively mastered by Microsoft.Gates legacy is impressive. In addition to software itself, Gates and his company have shaped how people think about competition in many industries where technology plays a central role. Today, there are more than one billion copies of Windows operating system on PCs around the world. It’s a prospect he relishes. ‘‘This whole thing about which operating system somebody uses is a pretty silly thing versus issues involving starvation or death,’’ he told Newsweek. ‘‘In no sense would I say, ‘I’m making a sacrifice because it’s something my mother told me I ought to do’. I am doing something my mother told me I ought to do, but it’s going to be a lot of fun. And I feel good about the impact.’’ The chances are, many others will soon be feeling good about it too.

STAGE IS SET FOR EURO CUP 2008 FINALS

Vs

The stage is set for summit clash of european championship 2008 between germany and spain. The final is on Sunday between two European powerhouses, each eager to shine on the big stage. Spain beat Russia in semi's in very impressive manner, though germany won the semi's against Turkey in an unimpressive manner one cannot underestimate Ballack's men in the finals as they were a very strong side for sure.
Spain’s Cesc Fabregas said that he had no intention of letting Sunday’s final against Germany slip through his hands. But at the Ernst Happel stadium on Thursday Fabregas got called up sooner than expected when striker David Villa had to come off injured in the 34th minute.
Spain have been underdogs for as long as I can remember and Germany haven’t really set the stage alight post their World Cup victory more than 20 years ago. Both teams will be taking an awful lot of confidence after their victories but I feel Spain have the edge, having earned a more decisive victory as compared to the Germans scrappy one.
